When most people breathe, they do not use their full lung capacity. Think about the doctor placing that cold stethoscope on your back. You take a deep breath and feel your shoulders rise. That is called "clavicular breathing." That means your breathing from your shoulders and clavicles (collar bones) and not your diaphragm. Getting more air into your lungs relaxes your whole body.
Here are a few easy steps to learn to breathe from your diaphragm:
1. Sit up straight in front of a mirror with your hands on your stomach.
2. As you inhale deeply through your nose, concentrate on filling your stomach and not
moving your shoulders. When you do this, your hands will be pushed away from you.
3. As you exhale, push the air out through your mouth (like your whistling), not your nose, and watch your hands come closer to you. The key is DON'T MOVE YOUR SHOULDERS UP.
4. This will take a few months to master, and you will be able to do it anywhere to relax.
5. If you experience any breathing difficulties, stop and consult your health professional.
